On the Sunshine Coast there really isn’t much we like more than a bit of fun in the sun, but there really are only so many triathlons and marathons you can run before things start to go a bit stale. Enter the world of obstacle endurance races.

Over the last few years, events known as obstacle course races have begun to surface attempting to capitalise on the success of the popular TV series ‘Ninja Warrior’ and the like. These events ask incredible things of their competitors, including vaulting, dodging, crawling, and climbing their way to the finish line over every number of watery, muddy, or eye watering high obstacles the event organisers can come up with. This April, try something a little bit different from your usual charity fun run, and put yourself to the test with the Spartan Race.

This April 6th, the Spartan Races are coming to the Sunshine Coast, hosted by the Maleny Dairy with the help of Visit Sunshine Coast and the Sunshine Coast Council. Think you’re not fit enough? Think again. Spartan Sunshine Coast has a race and a challenge for all fitness levels – from beginner to elite! In 2019, Spartan Sunshine Coast will offer up the 5km Sprint, 14km Super Sprint & Super Combo, Hurricane Heat 4 hours, and a brand new standalone Spartan Kids event on the Sunday. Racers can also choose from three categories; Open, Age Group, or Elite. Just starting out? Give the Open Sprint a go and see what Spartan’s all about. If you’re a regular, step it up a notch and conquer the Super or the Combo, and if you’ve got some junior Spartans in the pack, bring them along to tour the Sunshine Coast and let them loose on the Sunday kids race.

While the event itself falls on the 6th of April, registration for the race closes on the 2nd of April – so there’s still plenty of time to get your buddies together and get your team sorted for the big day, but places are limited. The obstacle course itself is kept a closely guarded secret until the event, to ensure the greatest level of challenge possible. Thankfully the official Spartan Race website has plenty of training and preparation advice available for you and your team along with all the information about the event you could possibly need, so don’t forget to check that out when you sign up.
