NIFF – Noosa International Film Festival
The Noosa International Film Festival is set to be one of THE EVENTS of the year for the Sunshine Coast, beginning on November 3rd and running over four incredible days of cinematic excellence.
For four days in four towns and five different venues, movie-lovers and filmmakers will have the opportunity to enjoy local, Australian and international talent on the big screen. The Noosa International Film Festival is showcasing a diverse programme of more than one hundred and forty short and feature length films, a classic silent film, an environmental documentary and an industry guest event. One hundred and thirty-two top-rated selection shorts from thirty-one countries will be screening across thirteen sessions on the Saturday and Sunday. These Short Film sessions will be shown at The J Theatre Noosa, Eumundi School of Arts Hall and the Pomona Majestic Theatre – the only remaining pre-World War Two picture theatre still standing and operating in Queensland.
Opening night will begin with ‘Inside Cinema – An Evening With Academy Award Winning Cinematographer John Seale’, a man who helped to create the visual marvels that were: Rain Man, Gorillas in the Mist, Dead Poets Society, The English Patient, The Talented Mr. Ripley, Harry Potter and the Philosopher’s Stone, Mad Max: Fury Road, and so many more. The evening will be hosted by Prof. Herman Van Eyken of the Griffith Film School and is entitled ‘a moment inside the mind of one of Hollywood’s contemporary greats’ and it will be a moment not to be missed.
Saturday will begin with the 1920’s classic silent horror, The Cabinet of Dr Caligari. Directed by Robert Wiene, it will screen at the Pomona Majestic Theatre with a traditional Pianist. This film is particularly famous for its landscapes and backdrops that warp reality into a twisted mutation of horrific proportions. This movie is all about delusions and deceptive appearances, madmen and murder with characters that exist at right angles to reality. The Cabinet of Dr Caligari is a classic that has earned its reputation and will be a fantastic addition to the Festival line-up. This is will be a cinematic experience I urge all film buffs NOT to miss.
The Noosa Integrated Catchment Association will be sponsoring the ‘Ecoflicks’ event, which will showcase official selections from the youth and open short film competitions. Ecoflicks will screen at a single event on Sunday at the Cooroy State School Hall, from 2-5.30pm, followed by the presentation of prize awards to competition winners. For the second half of the Ecoflicks event, NIFF will screen the environmental documentary, SEED: The Untold Story, an Australian premiere.
There is also plenty more to see with selections of fantastic world cinema on offer over the Festival’s duration, as well as plenty of fantastic local productions that you won’t see on the big screen at your local Event or Cineplex theatre.
